Predictions: FTV Angels — Followup

A short time ago, I’d made some predictions for this year’s premium From the Vaults set, which this year features Magic’s most beloved tribe: Angels. The final list for this boxed set is out, and it’s time to see how many of these fifteen Angels I got right!

When FTV: Angels was first spoiled, I sat down to make my list of predictions and tried very hard to balance out a set of fifteen reprints that could be considered both classic, playable (for the EDH crowd), and valuble (since the FTV sets always have several reprints that are money cards).

This was my list:

1. Avacyn, Angel of Hope
2. Jenara, Asura of War
3. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
4. Bruna, Light of Alabaster
5. Sigarda, Host of Herons
6. Maelstrom Archangel
7. Angel of Despair
8. Baneslayer Angel
9. Akroma, Angel of Wrath
10. Akroma, Angel of Fury
11. Akroma’s Memorial
12. Twilight Shepherd
13. Exalted Angel
14. Decree of Justice
15. Serra Angel

I left out the popular and pricey Linvala, Keeper of Silence, as I was fairly sure she would be in Modern Masters 2015 (she wasn’t), and I left out Commander precon cards Angel of Finality and Angel of the Dire Hour, because they’re not very in demand from casual players from what I’ve seen.

I leaned very hard on the Avacyn Restored set for my choices, with Avacyn leading her sister Angels Bruna, Gisela, and Sigarda; I passed up the opportunity to add Entreat the Angels, however, thinking that Decree of Justice was the more likely Angel token producer.

This is the actual FTV: Angels list:

1. Avacyn, Angel of Hope
2. Jenara, Asura of War
3. Iona, Shield of Emeria
4. Tariel, Reckoner of Souls
5. Lightning Angel
6. Iridescent Angel
7. Archangel of Strife
8. Baneslayer Angel
9. Akroma, Angel of Wrath
10. Akroma, Angel of Fury
11. Platinum Angel
12. Aurelia, the Warleader
13. Exalted Angel
14. Entreat the Angels
15. Serra Angel

Number of cards I got right: 7/15

So, basically I was half right on what WOTC would put in this set, which is much better than my average was for Modern Masters 2015 (my average on predictions with that set was only 30% right, which was pretty bad). There are a great number of hits in here for the casual Angel player (both Akromas, Avacyn, Aurelia, and Baneslayer); but also a high number of duds (Iona, who is miserable for EDH and was just reprinted in Modern Masters 2015, plus Lightning Angel, Iridescent Angel, and Platinum Angel, are all pretty bad choices).

With Linvala not being printed in Modern Masters 2015, reprinting her in the Angels set seems like a no-brainer; for some reason we have Iona instead. The inclusion of Entreat the Angels gives the set its lone Legacy card (and is much better than my expected Decree of Justice); however the lack of Angel of Despair and Maelstrom Archangel puzzle me, as they are each very popular (and certainly better than some of the cards included.

Long story short, as with most FTV sets, this one has some hits, and a large number of misses.

Conclusion: So there you have it, that’s a quick look at my predictions for FTV: Angels! I was half right, which is pretty good, and overall, I actually like my list better than the one WOTC gave us (I feel that a reprint of Linvala is a necessary thing right now, since her price tag is silly for a casual card). Overall though, if you can get this set for its MSRP, this is a pretty sweet bunch of foils for EDH. Thanks for reading!

  1. I don’t know why WOTC can’t get these things right. It’s like with Return to Zendikar. What’s the one cycle of cards people expect to find in a Zendikar-themed set? Fetchlands. So naturally they are not in the set.
    We’ve been Wizarded…again.
