A Tale of Two Cubes

I’ve always liked drafting, and so the idea of a MtG Cube (a controlled Limited environment where you get to draft from a pool of powerful cards each time) is something that has always appealed to me.

I have built and disassembled two Cubes of my own, and now, I’m looking to assemble a new one. This is the story of my thought process around building this Cube.

Let’s take a look!

A Look at Unstable’s Generals

It’s been a busy week here in geezer-land, as preparations for the holidays are underway. The tree is going up soon, decorations are laid out, and my son is very excited to meet Sant — ah, who am I kidding, he’s a baby, he’s not excited about anything but food right now. Heh.

Regardless, there’s been a lot of buzz in the MtG community this holiday season, with one excellent reason for it: a third Un-set, Unstable!

Though I have very carefully avoided social media and all spoiler sites, I have nonetheless seen a handful of the cards from this set, and I am pumped to play it in a week. Let’s take a look at more silver-border cards!

Hour of Devastation: First Impressions, Part Two

The last year or so has been a pretty good time to be playing EDH. Lots of new cards tailored for our format, from giant monsters, to big silly spells, and everything in between.

Now, spoilers have started for the next set, Hour of Devastation, the sequel to the Egypt-themed Amonkhet. Will this set continue Wizards’ strong run of good multiplayer sets?

Let’s take a second look at Hour of Devastation!

Building the Un-Spiracy Cube, Part Two

gifts_given

I’ve always loved variant formats in MTG, and I’ve always enjoyed drafting various Cubes. Heck, there have been two sets that I enjoyed drafting so much that I went and built single-set Cubes for (Rise of the Eldrazi and Innistrad, which I wrote about here).

With the release of Conspiracy: Take the Crown last year, it got me thinking about building another Cube to draft as a multiplayer set… This Cube would be full of the Conspiracies and fun draft cards that I loved from Conspiracy, and I’d replace the cards I found boring in the two Conspiracy sets with fun silver-bordered cards from Unglued and Unhinged.

This Cube would be called the Un-Spiracy Cube, and this week, I’ll be sitting down to finally brainstorm and build it. With a third Un-set, Unstable, on the horizon, I really wanted to make sure that I had an initial draft of this Cube up and running, that I can edit once that set comes out.

Let’s take a look!

Hour of Devastation… Sphinx tribal?!

The last year or so has been a pretty good time to be playing EDH. Lots of new cards tailored for our format, from giant monsters, to big silly spells, and everything in between.

As I went over on Monday, spoilers have started for the next set, Hour of Devastation, the sequel to the Egypt-themed Amonkhet, and it looks like Wizards very much has us EDH players in mind with this set… in fact, it looks like they even have cards planned for those of us who love tribal EDH decks!

But not just any tribe… tribal Sphinxes?! Let’s take a look at the new legend previewed today!

Archenemy – Nicol Bolas: First Impressions

Wizards has spoiled their latest MTG supplemental product, Archenemy: Nicol Bolas, and I wanted to touch quickly on it today. Though I don’t believe the first Archenemy sold very well seven years ago, I was a huge fan of it, and I did pick up all the schemes to use in multiplayer every so often.

Now, with the latest Archenemy set being Nicol Bolas themed, it’s time to take a look and see what the evil Elder Dragon has in store for poor hapless heroes!

My Favorite Cards of the Past 25 Years

Last week, one thing I noticed the MTG pros were doing was to list their favorite 25 cards by the year they were originally printed, making very cool lists of each card they enjoyed playing the most in that year. As this year marks Magic’s 25th anniversary, I thought this was a great idea, and a good way to start off the week.

What’s on my list? Well, let’s take a look!
