Our BOO Draft cards

Years ago, I’d read an article on starcitygames.com by Noah Weil about a “BOO Draft,” otherwise known as a “Build Our Own Draft.” The idea was to get 8 creative people to each create 45 Magic cards of their very own (or three packs’ worth of Magic cards), and do a booster draft with these cards. A BOO Draft is insanely fun, and it’s awesome to see how creative people can be when you let their imagination run wild on made-up Magic cards.

These are all the BOO cards that we’ve created to date:

THE BOO DRAFT I:

While we had no specific theme in mind for the original BOO Draft, each player was to create an overarching theme for their set, that they would base the entire set around. Some players did better at this than others.

Mark’s cards — “Choices”
Angela’s cards — Munchkin
Darby’s cards — “Random Darbyness”
Joel’s cards — The Road Builders
Brianna’s cards — “Tee Hee, Squirrels are Cute”
Jay’s cards — Eunead
Chris’s cards — The Wasteland
Jason’s cards — Power Creep City

THE BOO DRAFT II — THE OBLIGATORY SEQUEL:

For the sequel to the original BOO Draft, we chose to have the draft theme be video games. Each player chose a game, and built their set of 45 cards around it.

Mark’s cards — Mega Man 1
Angela’s cards — World of Warcraft
Darby’s cards — Final Fantasy 1
Joel’s cards — Clash of Clans
Brianna’s cards — Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken
Jay’s cards — The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Jason’s cards — Smash Bros. Brawl
Brad’s cards — Street Fighter II

THE BOO DRAFT 2.5 — MONO-COLOURED MANIA:

While we were waiting to actually draft The BOO Draft II, Jay came up with the idea to have five of us each come up with mono-coloured sets (ie. I would do 45 mono-red cards, Jay would do 45 mono-black, etc.). Hence, The BOO Draft 2.5 came to be.

Mark’s cards — Mono-Red

THE BOO DRAFT III — NOW WITH MORE GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE!:

For our third annual BOO Draft, the theme chosen was TV and movies. Each player had to choose their favourite show/movie and create 45 cards based on them.

Mark’s cards — WWF WrestleMania VI
Angela’s cards — The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Darby’s cards — Ranma ½
Brianna’s cards — The Phantom of the Opera
Jay’s cards — Transformers
Brad’s cards — Warner Bros. cartoons
brother Joel’s cards — Martial arts flicks
Mark the Ninja’s set — Our Favourite Films/Shows

THE BOO BATTLE BOX:

For our fourth year, most of the people who’d participated in the other BOO Drafts had prior engagements, meaning no one could make some fake cards. In the place of a draft, Darby and I decided to put together a Battle Box — a box full of custom cards, where we’d be playing games using a shared library/graveyard, and with only ten land.

Mark’s cards — 80’s/90’s cartoon nostalgia
Darby’s cards — Classic D&D

THE BEST OF BOO DRAFT:

With a baby on the way, and knowing my free time will be limited next year, I decided to set up a “Best of” draft to celebrate the drafts we’ve done so far, and highlight my favorite BOO cards that we’d designed in the past five years. This was a very tricky draft to get right, and I spent a lot of time crunching the numbers, picking cards, deciding exactly what would go in, and making sure each player’s cards were represented.

White cards
Blue cards
Black cards
Red cards
Green cards
Artifacts and colorless cards
Gold cards
