Rebuilding tribal Dragons: Switching Zirilan to The Ur-Dragon

Welcome to another edition of the article series where I go over changes to my different EDH decks in detail (and where I trash them and rebuild them into something better).

There have been a number of my decks over the last few years that have been on the chopping block after disappointing performances and poor games, and many have been culled or changed. Much as I have done before, I rebuilt decks that just aren’t working; this may involve either changing some cards around deck to deck, changing who the general of the deck is, or completely overhauling the entire deck.

Now, with Rivals of Ixalan long since released and Dominaria out as well, I’ve been going over each set of changes and additions to my EDH decks, and man, have there ever a lot of them!

Today, we’ll be looking at what I’ve done with one of our tribal lists: changing from Zirilan of the Claw mono-red tribal Dragons, to Commander 2017’s 5-color The Ur-Dragon. Let’s take a look!

The Ultimate Graveyard Block – The Event!

One thing I am known for in my playgroup is the ability to create interesting formats for strange tournaments, and it’s been a long time since I’ve done so. The last interesting format we did was The Gold Standard Challenge, quite some time ago, and so I felt it was high time that we did another cool tourney again.

This time, our format was called The Ultimate Graveyard Block. And what a format it was! Today, we’ll be going over the actual event! Let’s take a look!

The Ultimate Graveyard Block – Sample Decklists, Part Two

One thing I am known for in my playgroup is the ability to create interesting formats for strange tournaments, and it’s been a long time since I’ve done so. The last interesting format we did was The Gold Standard, quite some time ago, and so I thought it was high time we did another cool tourney again.

This time, our format is going to be called The Ultimate Graveyard Block. And what a format it will be! I took a quick look at the format here, and now it’s time to present to you the other decklists that I came up with for the format, but didn’t proxy and test. These are quite interesting lists, I felt, so it’s time to reveal them.

Let’s take a look!

The Ultimate Graveyard Block – Introduction

(Editor’s note: We were originally supposed to play this format a month or two ago, but life and illnesses got in the way. Having said that, we’re finally running this format on the 22nd, so here is the introduction to the format once again! Decklists to come once I have them. Enjoy.)

Dominaria in EDH

What a spoiler season it’s been for Dominaria, Magic’s spring set. First, the Chinese release notes were accidentally spoiled, leading to ~100 cards being spoiled. Then, Wizards released the English notes, so that people weren’t working with misinformation — this let us know that these leaked cards were legit. Since then, we’ve had a steady flow of new cards and information, letting us know that the Dominaria set was a truly awesome one, and one to really look forward to.

There’s been a lot of Dominaria spoiled since that initial flow. Let’s take a look at what I’ll be using in EDH!
