The EDH Battle Royale V has begun, and a whopping 81 generals are once again vying for the throne!

Coming from a MTG tournament player’s background, I have always had a spot in my heart for tournaments. I love the excitement of doing well and the thrill of competition, and it’s always been a blast to compete when I can. Hence, every year, my little EDH playgroup has hosted a massive EDH tournament between our decks, to crown a champion. This tournament is called The EDH Battle Royale, and this year will mark the fifth time we have done this.

And of course, it is now time for us to wage war once again! Today, we’ll be looking at how the next few matches went, and our first matchup today is a war, featuring the winner of The EDH Battle Royale II (and winningest deck of all time):

Match 8: Darby’s Phage the Untouchable vs. Saffi Eriksdotter vs. Azami, Lady of Scrolls

It’s time for The EDH Battle Royale V!

The End of Kaalia, and the Rise of Queen Marchesa

Welcome to another edition of the article series where I go over changes to my different EDH decks in detail (and where I trash them and rebuild them into something better).

There have been a number of my decks in the last year that have been on the chopping block after disappointing performances and poor games, and many have been culled or changed. Much as I have done before, this year I have once again redone decks that just aren’t working; this may involve either changing some cards around deck to deck, changing who the general of the deck is, or completely overhauling the entire deck. Since I got back into this blog from my long summer break, I’ve been going over each set of changes, and man, are there ever a lot of them!

Today, we’ll be looking at the change to our Mardu deck. This is one of the EDH decks that I’ve had together the longest, as Mardu has been built as Kaalia of the Vast triple tribal hyper aggro ever since the very first set of EDH precons came out in 2011. Today, I have finally changed from Kaalia to a new Mardu deck, and our Mardu deck has become Conspiracy II general Queen Marchesa.

As befits Marchesa, this is a dramatic change in leadership, but what does it do to our Mardu deck? Let’s take a look!

The EDH Battle Royale V — Building the Surprise Entrants, Part Two: Vial Smasher/Kydele

The EDH Battle Royale V is in full swing, and 81 generals are once again vying for the throne!

As I have done each year, we have a number of surprise entrants who will be duking it out in the Battle Royale for a shot at glory. This year’s surprise entrants were particularly troublesome, as I didn’t want to build anything that I’d already built in the past; this really limited my options, since I have built a lot of EDH decks. I wanted decks that would play differently than the other decks I have, decks that would be fun, and decks that would be highly original.

Today, we’ll be looking at a deck that I literally built last minute to add to the event, which has proven to be surprisingly potent. This would be one of the new four-color decks, built around the partner pair of Vial Smasher the Fierce and Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix! Let’s take a look at this quirky deck!
