Random Friday: Rebuilding the Machines

(Editor’s note: Yes, I realize it’s not Friday. Due to the holiday, this is being posted early.)

Welcome to another edition of Random Friday, the article series where I go over changes to my different EDH decks in detail (and where I trash them and rebuild them into something better).

There are a number of my decks this year that have been on the chopping block after disappointing performances, and many have been culled or changed so far. Much as I have done the past two years, I have been redoing the decks that just aren’t working; this may involve either changing some cards around deck to deck, changing who the general of the deck is, or completely overhauling the entire deck.

Today, we’re rebuilding two decks entirely, both of which have needed a change for some time now. First, our colorless deck, Karn, Silver Golem, is going to be cutting nearly all of its creatures to become a creatureless artifact control deck. Then, I’ll be rebuilding our Esper deck (currently Halfdane) into the artifact general Sharuum the Hegemon.

What will these rebuilds look like? Let’s take a look!

The Bad Set Standard Challenge

One thing I am known for in my playgroup is the ability to create interesting formats for strange tournaments, and it’s been a long time since I’ve done so. We recently did The Gold Standard, which was a lot of fun, and I thought I’d give a preview of the next fun tourney I’ll be running next year.

This time, our format will be called The Bad Set Standard. And what a wacky format it will be! Let’s take a look!

A deck for a friend: Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper

Over the last few years, for Christmas, I’ve built several EDH decks to give away as gifts to various friends and family. This year, one of my major gameplans was to once again build several Christmas EDH decks, that I could give away to friends and family. Today, we’ll be going over the second one of these gift decks for our friend Darby: the quirky hero Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper, from way back in Kamigawa block!

Let’s jump in and see the second gift deck I’d put together for Darby this year!

A deck for a friend: Karlov of the Ghost Council

Over the last few years, for Christmas, I’ve built several EDH decks to give away as gifts to various friends and family.

I’d created an Isperia deck for my friend Darby, to force him outside of his comfort zone; last year, I gave Darby a mono-green sneaky deck, built around Yeva, Nature’s Herald; then, I’d created a budget Mayael list for my baby brother Joel; I’d given away a budget version of Kaalia of the Vast to our friend Brianna; last year, I’d given Brianna the +1/+1 counter deck built around Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch; I’d given my girlfriend Angela a five-color planeswalker deck, Progenitus; I’d also built her the “big creatures matter” deck Volrath the Fallen.

Two years ago, I ran out of time to build anything for people, and gave away generic Xmas gifts. I thought at the time that this was kind of sad, since creating an EDH deck like this for a friend was an excellent way to give someone a personalized gift, and was always fun for me to do.

This year, one of my major gameplans was to once again build several Christmas EDH decks, that I could give away to friends and family. Today, we’ll be going over the first of these decks: Karlov of the Ghost Council, from Commander 2015! Let’s jump right in and see what I put together this year!
