Theros Prerelease: Part One, the First Flight

sun_titan

Excitement was running high for the new set Theros going into the prerelease, and I was very much looking forward to slinging some new cards. The rares looked fun, the idea of Sealed-ing the new set was okay (I had one major issue with it, which we’ll get to in a sec), and best of all, my little brother Joel had traveled into town from across the country to visit, and was coming up to the prerelease with me!

So, how did my prerelease go? Well, I’m glad you asked…

Spotlight On: Bosh, Iron Golem

bosh_iron_golem

Hello, and welcome to the start of a new ongoing series on mtgeezer, my Spotlight Series! In each article, I’ll be selecting and ‘spotlighting’ another EDH player’s deck, and going over the 99 choices they’ve made and any suggestions or changes that I’d make to the deck were I to play it myself. For this series, I’ll be choosing decks that look fun to play, and decks that have a great theme behind them.

And our number one deck to look at is my buddy Darby’s red and artifact deck built around Bosh, Iron Golem. Let’s get right into the nuts and bolts of the deck, shall we?

Hidden Gems #12: Rotating cards from Innistrad block, Part 4

angel_of_flight_alabster

Welcome once again to yet another edition of Hidden Gems! Today is part four of our article series on some great EDH gems from Innistrad block (you can check out part one here, part two here, and part three here).

The yearly set rotation, where the previous block’s worth of sets rotates out of Standard to make room for new sets, is happening in a few short weeks with the release of Theros, so today we’ll be looking at Dark Ascension cards that are great for EDH (and again, due to their impending rotation, their price is at an all-time low).

There are a ton of cards in this block that are awesome for EDH, so in our final article of this series, let’s dive right in and check out some M13 cards, shall we?

Theros: First Impressions, Part Three

sun_titan

When we last left off last week, the spoiler for the newest set, Theros, was at about a hundred cards or so spoiled, and excitement was running high for the new set. Lots and lots of playable EDH cards had been spoiled, and this was looking to be a very flavorful and fun set. At that time, I was very much looking forward to playing with the new cards, especially since so many of the cards spoiled were going to be going into my various EDH decks.

Well, as of Friday night, the entire set has been spoiled. Would the trend of fun, interesting, and awesome EDH playables continue? Let’s find out what else I’m going to be picking up to add to my EDH collection!

FNM Hero: Interlude — Brad’s Story

battle_of_wits_odyssey

For today’s episode of FNM Hero, we have a special guest author! Brad is a friend of mine, and he has decided to tell his story of his journey to this past Friday’s FNM, as he competes with an off-the-wall G/B deck that we brainstormed together, built around the scavenge mechanic.

Here in all its glory is Brad’s tale of victory and defeat!

Welcome once again to yet another edition of Hidden Gems! Today is part two of our article series on some great EDH gems from Innistrad block (you can view part one here, going over the cards from the Innistrad set).

Hidden Gems #12: Rotating cards from Innistrad block, Part 1

angel_of_flight_alabster

Welcome once again to yet another edition of Hidden Gems! Today, I’m going to be doing something a little bit different… The yearly set rotation, where the previous block’s worth of sets rotates out of Standard to make room for new sets, is happening in a few short weeks with the release of Theros, so what better topic for Hidden Gems than that of Innistrad block gems for EDH — especially since with their impending rotation, their price is at an all-time low?

There are a ton of cards in this block that were excellent for EDH, so let’s dive right in and check out some Innistrad cards, shall we?

FNM Hero: Part One

battle_of_wits_odyssey

The last few weeks, I’ve been doing something that is unusual for me. I’ve been going to play FNM at a local store; this is notable because I don’t often play Standard (since the introduction of mythic rares back in Shards block, buying singles has become way too expensive, especially for someone like me who is supporting my girlfriend as she goes through university) and I don’t normally have the time to dedicate to it. Years ago, I was very big into the local tournament scene, and I like to flatter myself by thinking I was pretty good at Standard at the time (hey, I have two Champs plaques from 2008 and 2010 to prove it!) I still pay attention to it, but most of my money goes towards EDH or Legacy, two formats I can just pick up and play whenever.

So, why have I started going to FNM’s? Well, it turns out that there is several upcoming money tournaments in my local area (one for a Black Lotus even!), so I figured it was time to start playing again, and “getting back into fighting shape,” as it were. I needed to learn the cards of the format (mostly the RTR block cards, since that’s what we’ll have to work with, along with Theros and M14, in a few weeks) and hopefully, squeeze some last bit of value out of my Innistrad cards that I haven’t really had the chance to play.

How have I been doing? Well, I’m glad you asked…

Hidden Gems #11: Red and white card drawing spells

reforge_the_soul

Welcome once again to another edition of EDH Hidden Gems! Today, I thought I’d take a quick look at a subject that I bring up a lot with newer players who are getting into EDH and like to play red and white decks — card drawing (or, the lack thereof in those colors).

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I love to draw extra cards. More cards drawn means that you will hit every land drop (hopefully), draw more answers to your opponents’ threats (hopefully), and draw more threats of your own. Hence, drawing extra cards is good.

Unfortunately, it’s also no secret that red and white have the weakest selection of card drawing spells available to any of the colors in EDH or multiplayer in general, so their options are sadly limited. Today, I’ll be taking a look at the card drawing available in those colors, and hopefully fans of those colors will find something useful. Let’s dive right in, shall we?
